Purim is Almost Here!

Purim is just around the corner! Purim is one of my favorite holidays, and no, it’s not just because of the hamantaschen (though it’s certainly a fun part). I love how the community comes together for the megillah reading, takes care of one another through both matanot l’evionim and mishloach manot, and takes time to relax and rejoice during the seudah. Let’s take a look at some pieces which embody both the holiday and v’semachta v’chagecha!

This is such an interesting depiction of children’s Purim costumes. The focus is on the children, rather than the mother who is hidden behind the stroller. With a close eye, viewers can see the crown peeking out from behind the awning, letting us know where the mother is. The artist also uses heavy brush techniques to make the vivid colors pop and the more muted ones fade to the background.

What I love most about this piece is the colors that are both muted and bright, perfect for spring. Pale blues and pinks wind their way around the painting, and spots of yellow peak through, just like the oncoming flowers. There are two clues that let the viewer know this is a Purim painting: the costumed figure in the center of the crowd and the cask pulled by the donkey, labeled ייו (yayin¸wine).

Finally, while this painting is not explicitly Purim-themed, it still carries the same spirit and energy of Purim. Our four silhouettes are bursting with joy, even if we cannot see their faces. The precise golden lines around them indicate movement, as they all dance together for a holiday of joy.
