My name is Livia Zarge and I’m an intern this summer at Leviim Judaica Art Gallery this summer. I’m an art history major with a minor in linguistics, topped off with a love, as the major implies, for art. Whenever people ask me why I picked art history, I tell them it’s because I like to understand and learn history through culture and beauty, not through imperialism, war, and chaos.
These past few days, I’ve had the chance to see a small section of the wide spectrum of Judaica art. I’ve seen everything from pastel pieces to abstract paintings of Jerusalem. I’ve also been researching different artists and learning about how each one’s background shapes their unique and special style. I’ve learned that Judaica art is more than just artwork found in your nearby Jewish store. It’s part of Jewish culture and within each piece is a little bit of history. I’m looking forward to broadening my horizons and writing more of these blog posts this summer.
