A Brief History of Chabad

Hi Everyone!

This week, I thought we’d dive into a bit of a lesson of the past: the history behind Chabad as we know it. While in high school, I never really had the chance to learn about Chabad- I only knew it was the organization that set up Chabad “houses” all over the globe, creating places and a network that Jews worldwide could rely on.

My freshman year of college, I learned that Chabad is so much more than that. I discovered that Chabad would become a home away from home. It was at Chabad that I met some of my closest friends at school, the people that would become part of my foundation.

The roots of Chabad’s outreach programs were laid by Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson, but Chabad’s extensive presence globally was the work of his son-in-law, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. He is commonly known as The Rebbe. He helped establish many places of learning, synagogues, and so many others.

In this picture, viewers can see a large gathering of Chabad rabbis, all looking towards a central figure: The Rebbe. A gathering like this is often called a farbrengen. During a farbrengen, participants may discuss different Torah ideas, sing a few niggunims (tunes), and enjoy some refreshments. It’s a time for a community to gather and share in their love of God.
